EduTech 2016
ideas, links and resources
I find it can be difficult to relay a thought or an idea you have had from something you have heard in a presentation from a conference.
It's very easy to have those moments when you are trying to explain a really interesting idea or concept a speaker has presented, but it just doesn't come out the same way, leaving you, and whoever you are speaking to with that "I guess you just needed to be there" feeling.
I will keep this to brief dot points or links, and as practical as possible. I will try and include some ideas shared, but apologies in advance if they do not convey the true meaning.
Baroness Susan Greenfield - Neuroscientist
"Thinking is movement confined to the brain" Try and get your kids to think as often as possible. It grows the connections within the brain, and over the space of 5 days, you can see growth of actual nerves within a human brain.
"Learning is not necessarily understanding" Rote learning, or cramming for a test, or learning something out of context isn't likely to stick because it hasn't been connected with real life experiences. Life experiences allow you to understand through the connections you have made.

Andy Hargreaves @hargreavesBC - Lynch School of Education
Digital Technology is a tool for engagement and disengagement.
We have moved out of the Age of Achievement (2000-2015) into the Age of Wellbeing and Engagement
It's moved from beating the odds and narrowing the achievement gap to changing the odds and changing the game.
Not all engagement is fun, noisy and loud, it can be quiet and contemplative.
Sources of engagement need to be: intrinsic, important, useful worth the effort and involve mastery. Mastery is doing something difficult or challenging that you have not done before. It can involve fun, but is something that you can achieve with support from a teacher.

"Searching can lead students down different paths (rabbithole) but guide them in working their way back to their original point."
Advanced search in Google - set search with Creative Commons filter.
Four levels of Creaative Commons search and what they mean:
Attribution - you must give credit to the original author
Non commercial - cannot make money from using the image. Eg can't use the image in a poster that could win a competition and prizes.
Share alike - if you alter the image/adapt the image, you must apply the same licence the original creator applied.
No derivative works - you cannot alter the image.
Photos For Class is a website that you can Creative Commons search and will attach a caption automatically to the photo saving you time and effort in having to do the citation yourself.
Susan Bowler - Ogilvie High School - Problem Based Learning
Does the problem have a real world connection? What is the driving question?
What is real to the students?
Be the facilitator and keep them on topic.
Example questions:
When is it a good time to use drones in peace time?
What types of robots can be used to test and check ocean acidity?
Where can drones and robots be used in security?
How can we use robots to manufacture vaccines?
How are robots used in the dairy industry?
